Chronic UTIs & Yeast Infections? Think Parasites.

That chronic UTI? There's a reason why antibiotics aren't cutting it...

Parasites can affect the urinary tract.

Here are some of the common culprits that can be mistaken for UTI or yeast…

🪱 Schistosoma (blood flukes)

This is the most well-documented parasite linked to urinary symptoms. Certain species lay eggs in the bladder and urinary tract, which can cause:

👉Burning or pain with urination

👉Frequent urination

👉Blood in the urine

👉Bladder inflammation and scarring

👉Increased risk of secondary bacterial UTIs

This condition is called urinary schistosomiasis and is common worldwide, including in travelers.

🪱 Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis)

Pinworms live in the colon but can migrate to the vaginal and urethral area, especially in women and children. This can trigger:

👉Urethral irritation

👉Recurrent “UTIs” with negative cultures

👉Vaginal itching or discomfort

🪱 Strongyloides (Roundworm)

These parasites can cause immune suppression and gut permeability, increasing susceptibility to recurrent bacterial UTIs, even if they’re not directly in the bladder.

🪱 Protozoa (Trichomonas vaginalis)

While technically an STI, it often causes UTI-like symptoms:

👉Burning with urination

👉Urgency and frequency

👉Pelvic discomfort

👉Often misdiagnosed as recurrent UTIs.

Why Parasites Can Be Missed

Many people with parasitic involvement:

👉Have recurring UTI symptoms but negative urine cultures

👉Improve temporarily with antibiotics, then relapse

👉Have accompanying symptoms like bloating, fatigue, itching, or pelvic discomfort

Antibiotics may suppress bacteria but don’t address parasitic root causes and can sometimes make things worse by disrupting the microbiome.

If UTIs keep coming back, it may be worth exploring parasite cleansing.
