Norman Cousins wrote an article in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1976 along with Anatomy of an Illness after he recovered from ankylosing spondylitis (where spinal tissue quickly degenerates). His docs gave him a 1 in 500 chance of survival so he removed himself from the hospital to pursue alternative treatments. He began watching comedies and was able to correlate that to pain-free sleep. Each viewing resulted in a reduction of white blood cells and blood sedimentation rate (markers for infection/inflammation). He was ultimately cured which he largely credits the power of laughter.
