Parasites in Fish

Did you know that every type of wild caught fish, including both fresh and saltwater, can contain parasites? Fish parasites can be protozoan, tapeworms, roundworms and flukes. Some studies show that 90% of wild caught fish are contaminated with roundworms, 283 times what it was in the 1970's.

The British Columbia Center for Disease Control states 75% of wild Pacific salmon are infected with nematodes. Another study of Alaskan researchers found nematode infestations in every single fresh-caught salmon they examined. Fish raised on aquafarms have the highest rates of parasitic infection along with a higher toxic burden from antibiotics and pesticides.

Sushi chefs and fish suppliers may remove visible worms but will likely miss eggs that can be microscopic. And don't think you're in the clear because you don't eat sushi... home freezers are typically not cold enough to kill them and there have been cases where parasites were actually preserved in freezers. Sometimes parasites are resistant to heat don't get cooked out.

Fish can also be a source of mercury toxicity. The rule of thumb is the bigger the fish, the greater the toxic burden.
