When a Pet’s Vaccine Made a Human Sick

Friendly reminder: vaccine shedding is real.
Ever gotten sick after being around someone recently vaccinated and wondered why?👀
Sometimes your intuition isn’t wrong.
This study describes an infection in a 43-year-old woman that came from her dog’s kennel cough vaccine. The bacteria involved, Bordetella bronchiseptica, normally causes respiratory illness (kennel cough) in dogs and cats but very rarely infects humans, almost always in people with weakened immune systems.
In this case, the woman was taking an immune-modulating medication, and about two weeks after her dog received a live, intranasal vaccine for B. bronchiseptica, she developed bronchitis-like symptoms.
Doctors cultured the bacteria from her sputum and used genetic testing to show that it was essentially the same strain as the vaccine her dog received, confirming that the infection likely came from the vaccine strain in her pet.
The report is meant to raise awareness that live animal vaccines can pose a real risk of transmission to humans.
