Explosive Diarrhea Isn't New... Here's What You Should Know

Don't Let The Cyclospora Headlines Scare You

🚨 News flash: Parasites have been causing explosive diarrhea forever. This isn't exactly breaking news, peeps. 😅

But if you've been caught up in the latest Cyclospora hysteria, here are a few facts that might put your bowels at ease. 😉

First of all... the United States is NOT immune to parasites. You absolutely can pick up a parasitic infection here. It happens all the time.

Yes, produce has been linked to Cyclospora outbreaks, but it's not the only possible source.

💧 Contaminated water can also spread it. While drinking untreated or contaminated water is a recognized source, water used to wash produce and even shower/bath water can play a role. Make sure your water filter specifically states that it removes parasites - most do not.

🏊 Recreational water including pools, water parks, lakes, and rivers can expose you to a variety of gastrointestinal pathogens - chlorine doesn't kill cyclospora.

🌱 Contaminated soil is another way parasites can be transmitted, so if you garden or walk barefoot, keep that in mind.

People infected with Cyclospora pass immature oocysts in their stool. Those oocysts don't become infectious for about 1–2 weeks after they're passed, which is why direct person-to-person spread is typically uncommon.

I saw one doctor online suggesting people should just avoid produce altogether... 😬 Cringe.

I’m not giving up my fruits and veggies. I eat berries every single day. And I keep anti-parasitics on hand so I’m prepared for situations like this.

If you're like me and refuse to live in fear of salad, the real move is to keep your toxic load low and detox regularly. Toxins are what make your body a hospitable environment for parasites. That’s why some people get exposed to Cyclospora and barely notice, while others end up with explosive diarrhea. A low-toxic lifestyle and consistent detoxing can mean those parasites never really get a foothold.

Stay aware, but don’t panic. Remember, the news loves fear porn. If you need a reality check, pull the total number of cases in your area, compare it to your population, and then compare it to previous years. A little perspective goes a long way.
