Pinworms are the most common parasitic infection. They mainly infect the colon and cause rectal itching, especially at night when the females come out to lay their eggs. Other symptoms include vaginal itching, gut pain, diarrhea and sleeplessness. Pinworms can also travel to the female reproductive area , affecting the uterus, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic organs. This may result in other infections, including vaginitis and endometritis. Pinworms primarily infect young children and their parents. The eggs are microscopic and a female can lay 10-15,000 eggs at a time . They are contracted from infected surfaces like toys, bedding, door handles and toilet seats. They can also be sexually transmitted and airborne . They can linger on objects and in the air for a few weeks. The life cycle from swallowing eggs to experiencing symptoms can take up to 8 weeks, which can make treatment challenging.   I hear from LOTS of frustrated parents who have the hardest time eradicating pinworms from their household, despite taking both prescription and otc antiparasitics.  There are a few reasons why pinworms are so hard to eradicate. #1 - Most pinworm medication, both prescription and OTC, don't address eggs . Additionally many just work in the gut but not systemically. ( That goes for most antiparasitic meds, not just pinworm medication. ) #2 - The entire family doesn't take the protocol. Pinworms are communicable like a virus , so similarly to how families tend to get sick together, parasitic infection is the same.  #3 - People fail to do a deep cleaning of their home. Because the eggs are microscopic and so easily transmissible, common surfaces should be wiped down including door knobs, toilets and light switches, and bedding should be laundered on the sanitize cycle. #4 - Most folks don't eliminate sugar while taking antiparasitics.
