Worms in Salmon?! What You Need to Know Before Your Next Bite

Okay, this pic is a bit of an exaggeration 😅 … but you get the point. Most people only associate parasites with sushi, but did you know that all wild-caught fish—freshwater and saltwater—can carry them?

Fish parasites can be protozoa, tapeworms, roundworms, and flukes. Some studies show up to 90% of wild-caught fish are contaminated with roundworms—283 times more than in the 1970s!

📊 The BC Centre for Disease Control reports 75% of wild Pacific salmon are infected with nematodes, and Alaskan researchers found them in every single fresh-caught salmon they studied. Even aquafarm-raised fish have high parasite rates, plus the added toxic load of antibiotics and pesticides.

Think you’re safe because you don’t eat sushi? Not exactly… Sushi chefs may remove visible worms but miss microscopic eggs. Home freezers usually aren’t cold enough to kill them, and some parasites survive cooking.

Oh, and let’s not forget mercury toxicity—the bigger the fish, the heavier the toxic burden.
