Did Your Thyroid Condition Start After Pregnancy?
That was me, 9 months pregnant and about to POP, back in 2011. 😂🤰
Little did I know I’d have another pregnancy right behind this one… and then, shortly after that, I’d be diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Fast-forward 15 years, and I know SO much more about the thyroid than I ever did back then. I had no clue at the time that SO many thyroid issues can show up after pregnancy. Here's why that happens:
When metals like aluminum or mercury enter the body, white blood cells can surround/bind to them... but they can’t eliminate them like they would a virus. So the metals can accumulate in tissues over time.
Think about everything your body has been exposed to over the years... diet, environment, medications, dental work, medical procedures, and more. By the time you have a baby, that can add up to decades of cumulative exposure.
When your immune system is activated by a major event like a pregnancy🤰, it signals the WBC's for help... which could be bound to these metals. Once metals are in the part of your body that needs help (i.e. the thyroid), another signal is called out for more WBC's... which in turn brings in more metals.
That can mean a massive increase in toxic exposure in a relatively short amount of time, putting additional stress on the thyroid and potentially contributing to a wide range of thyroid conditions, from Hashimoto’s, Graves’ disease, and thyroiditis to hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and even thyroid cancer.
Did your thyroid issues start during or after pregnancy? 👀 I’d love to know how many of you experienced this! Drop your story in the comments. 👇
